DIY Brushless Motor

Winding a BLDC motor from scratch to understand what the datasheet numbers actually mean.

  • BLDC
  • Motor winding
  • CAD
  • Magnetics
  • Stator geometry and winding pattern worked out by hand
  • Built to understand pole/slot counts rather than to hit a spec

A learning project rather than a product: winding a brushless motor from raw stator, magnets and wire to see where the performance actually comes from.

It is worth doing once. Pole and slot counts, winding pattern and air gap stop being datasheet parameters and become things you have physically made a choice about — and the tolerance you can hold by hand on an air gap explains a great deal about why commercial motors cost what they do.

This work turned out to be directly relevant later: my current role involves designing BLDC motor controllers and bringing motor manufacturing in-house, and having wound one badly by hand is useful background for specifying one properly.

Why it is on hold

It achieved what it was for. Parked as a completed experiment rather than an unfinished build.
